when combined, altogether will create an entirely different run through
entirely but keeping the vanilla game the same.<o:p></o:p>

Randomizer mod, every item in the game is randomized. Next is the Irregulator
that changes stats of all equipment in the game, but also the moveset of said
weapons – a club could have the attacks of a rapier. Lastly, StraySouls can
randomize enemy placement and the amount that appears, in order for the first
enemy in the game could be end game one.<o:p></o:p>

4. Stardew
Valley (Stardew Valley Expanded)

Indeed
an incredible achievement, made possible by one person, Eric Barone, and he's
still updating the game with plenty of content though. Eric knows mods are one
the most important thing in the gaming industry, so he goes out of his way to

knew that the base game has an abundance of content already, but those who have
sunk thousands of hours into this farming sim might want something new and
different. FlashShifter created Stardew Valley Expanded mod, which adds new
locations, new village, characters, plus loads more additions. Indeed mods are
the way forward for those who are looking for something new.

5. 5. Garry's Mod
 (Prop Hunt)

Garry's
Mod is a game yet not a game. Sounds confusing right? Playing the base title,
the player has no objectives; however, it provides a world that can be freely
manipulated. The game’s platform allows gamers to create their own user-created
content, which means they can play a game within a game. Anyways, there are
thousands of mods available for Garry's Mod.<o:p></o:p>

Prop
Hunt is one of the best mods out there, it is a modified version of hiding and
seeks, where the hiders or Props disguise themselves as objects within the map
and attempts to blend in within the environment. It's extremely entertaining
because the seekers have to find the props and kill them within the given time.<o:p></o:p>

2: Assassins Of Kings  (Farewell Of The
White Wolf)

Witcher 2 is indeed one of the greatest games; however, if you really want to
experience more stories of Geralt in the same engine you must download the

to The Witcher series, with the story that focuses on Geralt's marriage to
Yennefer.<o:p></o:p>

mode lacks voice acting; however, people who can overlook this one particular
gripe can install the Farewell of the White Wolf mod to relish another
well-made chapter in the life of Geralt of Rivia.<o:p></o:p>

game while polishing the experience as well. Anyone who wants to enjoy KOTOR II

NeoTokyo
is a very excellent mod that is quite a blast to play through for several
reasons. A tactical multiplayer mod for Half-Life 2 that ends up being wildly

multiplayer face-offs that occur in this mod are quite intense and
entertaining, with the cyberpunk setting and backstory of the game also being
quite amazing in its own right. Recently, a demo for a single-player campaign

Portal
2 is one of the greatest and phenomenal games of all time, and it also features

have released for this game. Featuring full voice acting and some

The Gains
vs. Public Interests vs. Developers

If you
have read my previous article titled “Overcoming exploitation in the gaming
industry with Modding” I clearly sighted that the video gaming industry is
about to surpass 138 billion USD by 2021. Meaning, it all boils down to
business again, at the end of the day if you are a greedy business owner profit
is more important than sharing a bit with the community. These developers will
do everything to stop modders from Modding, and from dominating the market with
free additions, surely they will. You bet!<o:p></o:p>

Second, because it takes a lot of man-hours for the
developers to implement a system that allows users to modify the game. Sadly it
isn't as easy as just port the whole game engine with the game release. The
user would have access to all the code and assets, which game studios want to
keep private to some degree in most cases. So to keep things private but
moddable the developers need to create a kind of API (application programming
interface) that allows the user to mid the game without opening up the things
the game studio wants to keep private.<o:p></o:p>

But
here's an extra one, there are actually a lot of games that could theoretically
be modded despite all of this. But it takes a bunch of reverse engineering,
extensive skills, and a lot of time to do so. A less intensive example of this
is the original dark soul's release on pc which can be modded without any
official support or any intention of it being modded.<o:p></o:p>

Some
skeptics believed that modding is slowly dying out because games today are hard
to make. They believe that putting that kind of serious time into making
something, with free tools out there like Unity, UE5, and Source 2, why make it
in someone else's game, where you'll make no money, have much less exposure and
are hampered by the original developer's design choices?<o:p></o:p>

I both
agree and disagree with their point of view; however. I can assure you modding
definitely isn't dead or dying, take a look at the XCOM Long War mod. A major
patch of LW generates as many players as a DLC release. It's basically lead to
a resurgence of the game, and undoubtedly a lot of sales afterward.

The
Benefits We Get From Modding<o:p></o:p>

Teamwork
- the concept introduced to us by modding and how incredibly important this is
within video game development. Majority of the cases, serious teams will move
along the pipeline using specific software keeping track of the tasks and
assignments for the team members. Commonly practice within the industry, and
gives modders familiarity with this concept, and how workloads are divided
among various positions.<o:p></o:p>

What we
know so far…<o:p></o:p>

Maybe,
it’s too selfish to say that some developers just don't want their game to be
touched and tinkered with; I know there’s always hidden agenda behind this kind
of reasoning. But whatever reasons they have it’s not for us to judge them
maybe they think it’s really for the best of their game OR maybe they just want
to sell us DLC. Lol!<o:p></o:p>

To sum it
all, modding teaches us dedication, passion, and creativity
to employers, and shows them that you are a heuristic learner in which you are
internally driven and willing to do what it takes in order to develop
high-quality material for the game projects. This is a passion at its
finest.

Have you
heard of overworked? Yes! It’s a common practice among Gaming Industries; they
will make you think and feel it’s leverage working for their company and doing
something great in the gaming industry.<o:p></o:p>

First,
they will exploit your dream – being hired in a gaming company is a big deal,
maybe some of us just really curious about how our favorite online games are
made off.  Fast forward, you got the job you’ll always dream of – a cool
job.  Maybe in the first few months, you’ll enjoy working overtime, but
later do know you’ve been working your ass off for over 80-hours a week.
Because some greedy corporates exploited your dream and they highly benefited
from the costs cutting. Why hire additional people when we can exploit them,
it’s their dream!<o:p></o:p>

The best example is the first infamous EA
video gaming company’s labor practices were discussed on a national scale.<o:p></o:p>

EA is one of the
most successful video game company in the world at that time was revealed
(through a blog post by a software engineer’s wife, herself a game developer)
as a place that insisted on permanent “crunch time,” cutting costs by
insisting on up to 80-hour work weeks from employees rather than hiring more
workers to make production schedules. The story broke at a time when EA was
buying up small studios throughout the industry, enforcing it's particularly
draconian standards on workers with little say in the matter.<o:p></o:p>

Important Role of Modding in the Gaming Industries <o:p></o:p>

For over
two decades, modders have made significant contributions to the evolution of
the gaming industry. Some of the worlds’ most popular games such as Battle
Royle, DotA, and Counter-Strike were made by modders. They also helped
countless games like Minecraft, Skyrim, and The Sims expand and live on with
new and exciting content for players.<o:p></o:p>

But
what is really modding? And why is it so essential in today's gaming industry?<o:p></o:p>

Modding is
the art of modifying someone’s game to create new content within that gaming
world. Currently, modding is an insanely popular activity because anyone can do
it, you don’t even need insane coding skills to be a modder.<o:p></o:p>

What makes
it more popular and fun is that it unlocks creativity, builds skills, and
brings happiness to gaming communities. For many people modding is a hobby

Is it
really Modding the answer for the exploitation happening behind the scenes of
the gaming industries? Yes or Maybe not. I'm not being skeptical here, I just
don’t want to put this into conclusion. But one thing is for sure, modding
creates another space for unprivileged individuals to work in the gaming
industries. A breath of fresh air for gaming enthusiasts.<o:p></o:p>

The point
here is, we can all be modders – we are as essential as the people working
tirelessly in the gaming company. Modding creates opportunity, builds skills,
and innovates a whole new experience of video gaming.<o:p></o:p>

Will
it reduces exploitation? YES! But will it totally STOP the ongoing exploitation
we ain’t seeing behind the scene? NO! As long as those greedy corporate
bastards’ feeds on money will always disregard the welfare of their workers,
and that’s the reality whether you are in the gaming industry or other

Gameplay, while others just want to change the aesthetics. Whatever your goal
as a modder there only one singular goal mods created, and that is to add quality
of life to the title, that the creators think should have been in the base game
when others have created massive expansions.<o:p></o:p>

The success of the modding spectacle is, at first glance, a little
counter-intuitive. After all, taking a company’s trademarked intellectual
property and modifying it for other gamers to enjoy the masterpiece.

A Brief History of
Modding           <o:p></o:p>

Modding games in the world of the gaming industry are the most vibrant
scenes, with a rich history of phenomenal games that have been modified,
improved, and expanded by creative starters and professional developers alike.<o:p></o:p>

With its growing community that has been consistently spawning some of
the weirdest and most inspiring creations in the gaming world.<o:p></o:p>

Tracing back the history of modding the original mods starts in the
early ’80s with a total conversion called Castle Smurfenstein being widely
considered the first. It is a classic arcade-style shooter designed for Apple
II is known as a parody of Castle Wolfenstein.<o:p></o:p>

“Castle Smurfenstein was a parody of Silas Warner's original Castle Wolfenstein game written

in the early 80s. Smurfs. That was the real threat now.<o:p></o:p>

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V has been extensively overhauled by fans. The ability to hijack a cop
car and take on police missions that we saw in GTA III and GTA IV was notably
absent in GTA V, then few fans created the Police Mod to address the mission.
Then, another group of modders felt that there is something missing, guess what
they add? It’s the zombies so the horror continues. lol. GTA V players who want
added graphical fidelity need only to download the R*hancer Photorealism mod
that lends an authentic sheen to the game’s environments, weather, and

Team Fortress 2 - Valve’s mega-popular, and free-to-play, based on the Quake engine and
released in 1996, is yet another game with mod roots, and yet another case of
assimilated Valve the creators originally mod. Valve hired awesome developers

Is it really necessary for developers to open their game to modders? What
benefits are they getting if they open their game for modding? How do video
developers feel about mods? Well, to answer all that we need to understand how

It’s the art of modifying a game, creating a whole new experience for gamers
from an existing game engine. Modding a game means creating custom levels,
assets, characters, or even unique or stand-alone games within the game. Modder
is a term used for a person who mods a game.<o:p></o:p>

The rapid growth of modding over the years has built an entirely unique and
brilliant community across the internet. It allows talented individuals to
share their creations for the gaming world to enjoy.

The Importance of Modding<o:p></o:p>

If the car uses oil to maintain the moving parts of the engine lubricated
and help to avoid damage and keep your engine running smoothly. The same goes
with modding, it’s the oil of the gaming industry, and it helps the gaming
world alive and more interactive. The more you open your game to modders the
livelier the game will be.<o:p></o:p>

In today’s generation, it’s uncommon for games not to have some form of
modding. Almost every game released on the PC will allow you to mod, whether it
is art, programming, or design-based.<o:p></o:p>

While in previous years developers are still skeptical about modding, as
time passed, developers are starting to acknowledge the important role of
modding in the gaming industry. They have opened their doors to allow modding,
or even encourage modders for their games because in return it benefits them.
Not only does modding benefit the developers, but it opens up an entire library
of creations for players. These creations can help extend the lifespan of video
games, and can even bring in a larger player-base, thus benefiting both
parties.<o:p></o:p>

Multiple intellectual properties will cease to exist today if without the
help of modding. Multiple gaming studios were formed because of the success of
their mod(s) which were later developed into full-blown games. Thus serves as a
gateway for talented and creative individuals to come together and collaborate
and the results can be life-changing.<o:p></o:p>

In the early years of the video gaming industry, where modding is not so
popular, developers are still skeptical about it. They thought mods will
destroy their creation and can potentially lower their sales.<o:p></o:p>

The video game industry has grown into one of the biggest, most profitable
entertainment industries in the world with a global market that is expected to
surpass 138 billion USD by 2021, from an estimated volume of $67 billion in
2012. In a highly competitive industry, safeguarding the game concepts from
copycats is a tug of war, as well as tough targets set by publishers,
contribute to a trend of risk aversion and reliance on established game
franchises. Developers are under constant pressure to deliver the next
blockbuster game in a very competitive market. Stakes are high so originality
and innovation - instead of fueling competition in a diverse market - are
regarded by many developers as risky ventures. Some argue that innovation in
the industry is not really innovative at all anymore.<o:p></o:p>

It doesn’t come as a surprise to me, that modding has come to play a
considerably important role in the video gaming industry over the years.
Paragons such as Counterstrike, a user-created modification to the popular PC
game Half-Life, which has sold over 4.2 million units so far, expressively
underline the economic significance that game modifications can have. Gaming
companies tend to seek legal ownership of the content they create as users are
increasingly aware of the financial weight of their activities. So it may seem
as if only one side stands to profit.<o:p></o:p>

Stakeholders in the gaming industry are careful in retaining the rights to
any intellectual property they created; though modders are still acknowledged
and their activities highly encouraged by the developers. By having said, they
tend to create boundaries for the appropriate use of it. By means of various
contractual agreements, such as Terms of Service (ToS) agreements, End User
License Agreements (EULA’s), developers strive to govern the creative
activities of users in their virtual worlds.<o:p></o:p>

To sum it up, if you have read my previous article about “Destroying
vertical gardens in gaming through modding”  I have debunked the
negative impact of modding from a business perspective. Though, there is a
negative impact in some way, looking into a bigger picture – that impact is
just a tiny portion of a much greater outcome if you open your door to modding.
 Just like you sacrifice a penny, but you got 100 bucks in return. Modding
is an income multiplier, why? Because the game will have a longer lifetime, it
will attract more player-based users, meaning more income generators for the
game.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p> </o:p>What we learn so far…

Modding is a NECESSITY, period. It’s a must for every
developer to open their door or even encouraged modders to put spice into the
gaming arena. As the saying goes the only constant in this world is change.
When we accept change, we accept growth, criticism, and success.<o:p></o:p>

So if the developers want to continue to tap the creative potential of their
respective user communities and to sustain their interest in creating content,
chances are that they will need to be more inclusive in their governance
strategies. They need to give what is due for modders and stop these
aristocratic fundamentals in a form of various license agreements. There should
be a symbiotic relationship between the industry and the modders alike.<o:p></o:p>

Currently, we find ourselves in a very exciting position. Developers are now
inviting the gaming community to showcase their creativity and passion at a
grassroots level, as well as providing professional tools and development kits
to nurture promising talent. This will often result in collaboration with the
rising stars in the modding community and development studios, opening doors to
careers in the game industry.<o:p></o:p>
